Origin II (2014), written by Kieron Gillen, art by Adam Kubert, colors by Frank Martin.

We pick up where the last series ended, with Logan living in the Canadian Wildernness with a pack of wolves. He helps them hunt, takes care of the pups, and they took him in as one of their own. Unfortunately, their peace is disrupted by a wandering polar bear.

The bear finds the pack's den and kills the wolves. He and Logan fight, killing eachother. The art in these pages is very striking, red blood contrasting with the white background.

Logan survives, because regenerating factor, but he's all alone again.

We are then introduced to Nathaniel Essex (steampunk mad scientist TM; I believe he's Mr. Sinister?), the man responsible for the polar bear's appearance, in a effort to find mutants. You can criticize him for using a weird method, but it worked, so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . He tries to flush Logan out with deadly gas and an army of lobotomized goons, but it fails.

We also meet Hugo Haversham (circus owner), his animal trainer Clara (very good with animals; has a disfigured face; I feel she's marked for death) and tracker Creed (he looks like Sabretooth, but spoiler alert - he's not Victor). They do manage to capture Logan and he becomes a circus attraction.

Clara is not happy about it. Creed just thinks "better him than me."

Essex shows up and convinces Hugo to let him study Logan in his lab, where he proceeds to vivissect him. And promises to turn Logan into a perfect weapon (this and the previous bear fight are giving strong parallels to the recent Ultimate Wolverine).

Luckly, Clara and Creed show up and rescue Logan. The three end up in New York, where Clara tries to help Logan and Creed isn't Happy. Clara and Logan grow closer, but before she can explain her relationship with Creed, they're attacked by Essex's goons, and Logan kills Clara the exact same way he killed Rose.

Creed comes back and you're wondering are they gonne fight? Is this the beginning of a lovely, decades-spanning rivalry? (I only know Sabretooth from the movies, sorry).

Well, no. He immediatelly puts the blame on Essex, and tells Logan they should go kill him. He also clarifies that Clara was his sister.

She also has a healing facotr.

She's alive.

And, yes, this a trap for Logan. He manages to kill Essex (temporalily, at best) before he gets his villain monologue going, so that's nice.

The big confrontation is between Logan, Creed and Clara. Clara is ready to dump Creed to be with Logan, but Logan can't let things go and ends up throwing Creed into the vat of zombefying potion Essex was using on his goons, so now Clara is done with him and Logan ends up alone. I feel that's a recurring theme in his life.

The final reveal of the story is that the Creed brother we've been following wasn't Sabretooth after all.

My thoughts: I enjoyed this one too. The story is a bit more convoluted than Origin I, with more connections to the wider Marvel Universe. The twists with the Creed siblings worked for me, maybe because I'm not familiar with Sabretooth/Wolverine rivalry in the comics. Although, if this was meant to be the origin of said rivalry, maybe Sabretooth should have been in the book.

The art and colors were great and I'm really glad Clara was not fridged.
